"How to" instructional poster for Vertical Adventures

Instructional Graphic Design
Project description: Designed to be a wall length poster to be hung in a local climbing gym, Vertical Adventures. This poster is meant to be read by climbers during their ascent as an instructional poster on how to begin climbing outdoors. The class prompt was to create a "how to" instructional graphic.

The photography, illustration, and design is my original work with the exception of the Vertical Adventures logo, as they are my client.
Concept Development:
Right off the bat, I knew that I wanted to do something involving rock climbing.
I settled on the idea of doing something related to climbing outdoors- inspired by my recent experience of learning how to do that for the first time. I played around with the idea of explaining how to set up a top rope anchor outdoors...
I quickly realized- that's way too many steps, and I struggled to find a fitting audience for the informational graphic. So I went back to the drawing board.
After much discussion, I landed on explaining "How to get started climbing outdoors"
By making a word bank for the project, a natural direction for the copy aspect of the project became clear.
By taking inspiration from graphics hanging up around Vertical Adventures and the different exercises done in class, I settled on the copy that I definitely wanted on the final product.
From there, I started by coming up with a basic layout for my poster and visualizing where it would end up at Vertical Adventures.
After that, came a lot of sketching to refine my over all layout.
And then came a lot of sketching to refine the smaller elements that make up the poster.
Then, I finally started getting things digital. I found fonts that mimic VA's signature font, and tried those out. I landed on "Actor," the first one listed.
After I had my font, I put all of my elements together digitally and produced this draft of my final poster. I chose to use a photograph as a background because of the existing posters inside of VA that share the tall length and nature background.
After some refining from the help of David and Brice, this became my final product:
