URBAN SOUNDSCAPE

CONCEPTUAL STATEMENT
Urban Soundscapes is a public installation involving the interaction between the audience and the sound sculptures that could playback recordings of a journey from Putrajaya Sentral to Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur. These recordings act as auditory archives of the environment around the urban places in KL that are hectic and noisy because of the daily activities and life routines that happen there. The auditory archives could provide an idea of what a specific place sounded like, thus giving a virtual experience by putting the listener at a certain place or environment through sounds. Another part of this project is the sound sculptures, which are the visual representations of the environment’s sounds. The concept of making the sculptures shaped like a vinyl records works as an analog sound storage medium. However instead of having spiral groove, the sculptures have spikes coming out from the disc to represents the loudness of the sound. A turntable is made to playback a sound from the sculptures and the audience can control the speed of the turntable and the sound by using a knob.
TECHNICAL STATEMENT
Urban Soundscapes is an artwork created through the process of sound recording and converting it into 2D spectrograms images which then being used to build 3D models in Autodesk Maya using the technique of displacement map. The models are then printed out using 3D printer Ultimaker and exhibited as sound sculptures. There is a fiducial symbols under each sound sculptures that can be detected by camera to scan and playback the sound recordings. A turntable box was made using woods with electronic components inside (arduino, DC motor, diode, NPN, 9v battery, etc.) A knob on the box is used to control the speed of the motor rotation as well as to manipulate the speed of the sound.
