Alter Academia
Book design for Alter Academia 2018
In 2015 TEOR / ÉTica seeks to rethink some aspects of its program, thinking of new ways of understanding curatorial and giving alternative uses to the spaces. With the interest of supporting more artistic processes and fostering collaboration and collectivity, we have launched a pilot plan of artistic residences in Side V. This is born from the desire to promote training instances that are of benefit to the artist, which at the same time generate a network of critical dialogue during the process of developing a project.
The residence consists in the use of the V Side rooms as a workspace for three months. Complementary to this, collective sessions are periodically held, where residents will be presenting advances in their research, results or experiments and will receive special guests for group discussions.
The Alter Academia aims not only to give opportunity to experience and support young artists, but also to be a space for the institution to learn, both from residents, and from those who visit us and work with us. Each year is built on the learning of the previous year, in terms of how it is configured and the dynamics that begin to emerge organically.
In a first meeting, the Alter Academia could be considered an artistic residence. But in its long-term construction, it is also considered as a non-formal learning school, an essay space for methodologies and exchange of thought between artists, curators and other agents from different disciplines who want to share their ways of working. Through conversations, workshops and dialogues with different audiences, we seek to analyze these approaches and exchange processes, exploring alternative ways of doing and working to open possibilities that go beyond the traditional ways of building and socializing knowledge.  This book is an archive of the artistic residence. Written by the participants, it gathers all workshop and exercise guidelines done during the residence, so anyone who wants to do them can look for the "recipe" in this book. However, far from just being a guide: it collects thoughts, processes, memories and love letters of five people who worked, lived, had lunch, sang karaoke, organized parties and unburdened together for three months.
