APPLIQUE - CRAFT OF VADAJ

APPLIQUE

Functional, decorative and so much more....
appliqué is so much more than ‘decorative’.
Its origins, as with many traditional crafts that have taken on a more varied life in modern culture, are functional.

This is my project  done as a part of craft workshop module by associating with the applique artisans from Vadaj, Ahmedabad.

Vadaj......
Vadaj is a small town, approx. 22 km away from Gandhinagar. We went to meet the artisans who have been practicing applique for about 2-3 generations. These artisans belong to the migrated community from Sindh and Kutch before partition.

We visited the artisans home where they showed us few of their works, seeing a variety of applique work ranging from to traditional to the most contemporary products. It was amazing to see how the essence of craft has changed over time according to the market needs. They narrated the story behind each of the work, the intricacy, use of perfect colors and patterns, the time taken to finish those were mind blowing.

My concept

I was fascinated by the idea of craft used as a medium to say a story. The way in which this craft was used as a medium to say stories about the ancient folktales I wanted to incorporate a story. But rather than just saying any story I wanted to narrate something that would want every one to understand and listen to. So, I directed a social impact that could be narrated through imageries.

THEME-

SHIFTING SANDS OF TIME   -   LIVES UNDERWATER

The idea was to narrate different stages of plastic pollution, how it is affecting lives underwater.
