Valor Christian High School Winter Play "A Christmas Carol" Poster
The first phase of the creating the branding for the Christmas Carol was to think about the typography. I wanted the text to have a classic and recognizable feel to it, something the audience would connect to immediately. First I decided to investigate several font choices, none of which was doing exactly what I wanted it to. I decided that creating my own typography, still using these fonts as direct influences, but giving myself some flexibility with being able to edit each letterform.
After working through several versions, a final, stylized, slab serif version was completed as vector art in Illustrator. That art was then take into Photoshop and was given a 3D effect as well as warm golden look that would work well with the classic theme that is a familiar part of the play.
The next step was to begin working on photographic treatment of the poster design. The student who would play Scrooge in the play as well as a young actor who would be a stand in for Tiny Tim were brought into the photo studio to get shots taken. The photographer used a strong light source that created a silhouette effect that would set the desired look and feel for the poster. The actors were then meticulously clipped out from the background and shadows were recreated.
A stock image was then selected that was era appropriate. Every modern reference had to be removed to make the picture seem period. The lighting was then edited to be warmer and to have more emphasis.
Vector snow was added both in the foreground as well as behind the actors. As last minute to flip the composted picture and the addition of a border and the typography finished off the poster design.
