Helmet PSA Photo Series

The objective of this shoot was to create three related images, advertising a product, service, or cause. I chose to create images promoting motorcycle helmet safety. Each refers to a fruit commonly used as slang for a person's head: melon, coconut, grape. The fruit encased in a helmet is shown intact while the fruit on its own is destroyed. I conceptualized the final results to look similar to the following:
First was the issue of helmets. The watermelon was easy: a typical motorcycle helmet. The coconut was dressed in goggles and a novelty helmet designed for a pet. The helmet for the grape was the most difficult to find. Ultimately a keychain helmet with the ring removed did the trick.
The setup involved the subject fruit being placed on an elevated, reflective surface. A strobe with a colored gel was positioned on a floor stand below the table to light and color the background. Different gel colors let through differing amounts of light, so obtaining a consistent look for the background across the 3 images required adjustment to the power of the strobe.
The gelled strobe is visible under the table (above left).
Another consideration was getting a consistent look despite the range in size between the watermelon and grape. Fortunately, the entire series was shot in one session, allowing for direct comparison of images during the shooting process. The position of the camera relative to the fruit table and the table relative to the background had to be adjusted to provide consistency

Finally, the addition of the type completed the project.
