This piece was completed as the final model for my HND in Model Making at the City of Glasgow College, this large 28mm scale diorama depicts a fictional oriental-inspired city. The majority of the work was completed over a three-month period and represents approximately 400 hours of work.
The model was designed to be used as a photography backdrop for wargaming miniatures (like Warhammer) with a large enough floorplan to allow photos to be taken in numerous locations around the model. The angled street design allows shots to be taken with minimal backdrop and after effect editing.

It is built completely from scratch, being first designed in AutoCad and then laser cut in MDF and mounting board. All the surface finishes were then applied by hand by brush with no transfers or pre-coloured parts used. This was critical to achieving the consistent comic book art-style that is found across the model.
The model also features a wide range of references to films and video-games, the names of the stores as well as the graffiti murals and even the type-faces used on the shop lettering. The architecture and overall project in general was inspired by the art of the Indie game "Ruiner",  with the name Rengkok City also referencing the hub area of the game.
One of the major highlights of the model are the hand-painted murals, painted to practice complex freehand work where decals would be inappropriate due to the deep etched surface of the bricks (as well as represent a personal challenge!) There are three main artworks, a Pokemon Eeveelutions design, a KDA inspired portal and "Her," the assassin handler from Ruiner.
While the model is complete as is it will likely receive additional parts over time. The roof was originally intended to have a stair access block but this was removed so it could be redesigned to be removable as it limited the room on the roof area. This part will likely be the first new piece that gets completed and will feature another graffiti mural.
The arcade on the model features a full interior with replica arcade machines depicting real games as well as an air hockey table and vending machines. To better show off the internal details LED lights were installed in the roof and are controlled from inside one of the other stores.
A short time after the main model was completed work began on a small covered stairwell structure to mount on the left hand roof. This piece is intended to be removable for when figures are being displayed and additional space is required. The exposed areas of brickwork gave a chance to complete another mural, which is now the most complicated and time intense piece of work featured on the model.
