Artificially alive video art

When Diaghilev Festival, Russia’s most advanced theatre and performance event, asked us at Avocado Toast to support their closing party, we knew we could not go too simple.
We partnered with our long-time friend, a new media artist Ildar Yakubov known for his experiments with generative visuals. We asked ourselves: how can we make this as alive as the concert itself?

First, we listened to the collectives we were going to support with visuals at the party. Then we digitized video art loops into mathematical formulas of self-replication (based on Ulam-von Neumann cellular automata works) assigning a unique formula to each of the bands and played them in real time. This resulted in an artificially alive, self-reproducing video art that was mathematically relevant to the music of the bands.
