Explorations towards the resignification of the body as an object through body modification in a transhuman and desexualized society

Trans.hum4n_o pretende especular acerca de las posibilidades de castración genética del cuerpo humano como recurso para controlar la sobrepoblación y así regular los efectos del Antropoceno. El proyecto abarca el transhumanismo desde una mirada del diseño de ficción, el cual supone aplicar metodologías del diseño tradicional para generar más allá de un producto o resultado concreto, espacios de discusión y conocimiento para reflexionar sobre los avances que transforman la concepción tanto del cuerpo como del ser humano. El proyecto plantea la construcción de escenarios hipotéticos o diégesis que permiten ser validados por medio de prototipos diegéticos o artefactos que únicamente tienen coherencia dentro del mundo de ficción creado, estos prototipos hacen una reflexión hacia los cambios tecnosociales y biológicos que traería el avance hacia una sociedad sin órganos reproductivos y sin posibilidades de procreación natural.

Trans.hum4n_o aims to speculate about the possibilities of genetic castration of the human body as a resource to control overpopulation and thus regulate the effects of the Anthropocene. The project covers transhumanism from a fictional design point of view, which involves applying traditional design methodologies to generate, beyond a concrete product or result, spaces for discussion and knowledge to reflect on the advances that transform the conception of both the body and the human being. The project proposes the construction of hypothetical scenarios or diegesis that allow being validated through diegetic prototypes or artifacts that only have coherence within the fictional world created, these prototypes make a reflection of the technological-social and biological changes that would bring the advance towards a society without reproductive organs and the possibility of natural procreation.

Como consecuencia del masivo incremento demográfico del planeta, y por ende el aumento de la colisión ambiental en la biosfera, se establece un gobierno totalitario que ejerce un nuevo orden mundial para iniciar un proceso de terraformación total de la superficie terrestre y un reinicio numérico en la temporalidad de la existencia de la raza humana, esto como respuesta a la decadencia de la visibilidad solar dada por la contaminación producida por la especie y como símbolo del comienzo de una nueva era para la humanidad, en otras palabras, el aumento de individuos repercutió en la claridad del firmamento de la tierra causando el nublamiento irreversible de la atmósfera, impidiendo la trascendencia visual entre lo terrenal y lo espacial, sin embargo la distinción temporal entre día y noche no es afectada por este fenómeno, el cual radica en la trastornación visual de los gases producidos por la raza humana.

As a consequence of the massive demographic increase of the planet, and therefore the increase of the environmental collision in the biosphere, a totalitarian government is established to exercise a new world order to initiate a process of total terraforming of the terrestrial surface and a numerical restart in the temporality of the existence of the human race, this as a response to the decadence of the solar visibility given by the contamination produced by the species and as a symbol of the beginning of a new era for humanity, in other words, the increase of individuals affected the clarity of the firmament of the earth causing the irreversible clouding of the atmosphere, preventing the visual transcendence between the earthly and the spatial, however the temporal distinction between day and night is not affected by this phenomenon, which lies in the visual disruption of the gases produced by the human race.

El fundamento estético y conceptual de esta pieza parte de la búsqueda de patrones disruptivos en el paisaje satelital de Google Maps, estos responden a sistemas de riego artificiales en diferentes puntos áridos del planeta; las imágenes satelitales representan teóricamente un hipotético proceso de terraformación de territorios no aptos para el humano. De modo simultáneo se reconstruye un paisaje no real y abstracto que muestra el comienzo del todo: EL VACIO Y EL CAOS.

The aesthetic and conceptual foundation of this scenario is based on the search for disruptive patterns in the satellite landscape of Google Maps, these respond to artificial irrigation systems in different arid points of the planet; the satellite images theoretically represent a hypothetical process of terraforming of territories unfit for humans. Simultaneously, a non-real and abstract landscape is reconstructed, showing the beginning of everything: THE VOID AND CHAOS.

La reconstrucción de un paisaje urbano no real se basa en una segunda exploración en Google Maps a la isla de Hashima o Gunkanjima en Japón, esta vez el material obtenido se abstrae de un recorrido en Street View con el fin de recoger información visual de los elementos arquitectónicos que demuestran las consecuencias de la no-habitabilidad humana.

The reconstruction of a non-real urban landscape is based on a exploration in Google Maps of the island of Hashima or Gunkanjima in Japan, this time material obtained is abstracted from a Street View tour to collect visual information of the architectural elements that show the consequences of human non-habitability.

Espectro sonoro de patron satelitall en Google maps - 38°19'56.6"N 113°00'49.5"W

La ambientación sonora responde a la producción en bruto de tonos y ruidos que generen la sensación de crudeza y decadencia planteada en la teoría del concepto. De igual manera se obtienen fragmentos del audio resultantes de un proceso de transformación de los patrones satelitales en archivos TIFF que posteriormente son interpretados en audio a través de su importación como datos en bruto en Adobe Audition. En otras palabras, la pieza sonora del producto audiovisual surge de la reinterpretación sonora del archivo de imagen que hace referencia al proceso de terraformación.

The sound ambience responds to the raw production of tones and noises that generate the sensation of rawness and decadence proposed in the theory of the concept. Similarly, fragments of the audio are obtained from a process of transformation of the satellite patterns in TIFF files that are interpreted into audio by importing them as raw data in Adobe Audition. In other words, the sound piece of the audiovisual product arises from the sound reinterpretation of the image file that refers to the terraforming process.

Este prototipo es una pieza audiovisual ejecutada en un entorno 360°, donde la interacción del usuario permite explorar la definición del espacio arquitectónico del mundo de ficción que contextualiza el proyecto de manera atmosférica. Este producto visual pretende comunicar la manera en la que los factores ambientales dentro de la diégesis repercuten luego en la transformación geográfica del planeta. Algunas frecuencias lumínicas están vinculadas a las frecuencias sonoras con el fin de obtener efectos estroboscópicos que trastornen tanto la visión como la audición.

This prototype is an audiovisual piece executed in a 360° environment, where the user interaction allows to explore the definition of the architectural space of the fictional world that contextualizes the project in an atmospheric way. This visual product aims to communicate how the environmental factors within the diegesis have repercussions on the geographical transformation of the planet. Some light frequencies are linked to sound frequencies to obtain stroboscopic effects that disturb both vision and hearing.

Para el desarrollo conceptual y teórico se toma el contexto estético, social y arquitectónico de la ciudad amurallada de kowloon, donde la densidad poblacional generaba una elevada demanda de espacio habitables, desarrollando un modelo arquitectónico de urbanización vertical, es decir la construcción de viviendas era dada una sobre la otra, lo que el crecimiento de este asentamiento se daba hacia el firmamento y no hacia el horizonte terrenal. Con el fin de demostrar la densidad de individuos que desencadenaría se recurre a la extracción de fragmentos de la cámara web en tiempo real que cubre el cruce de Shibuya en Tokio, esta demuestra la densidad de sujetos en un punto donde colisionan siguiendo un trayecto individual.

For the conceptual and theoretical development, we take the aesthetic, social, and architectural context of the walled city of Kowloon, where the population density generated a high demand for living space, developing an architectural model of vertical urbanization. In other words, the construction of houses was given one above the other so that the growth of this settlement was given towards the firmament and not towards the earthly horizon. In order to demonstrate the density of individuals that would trigger the extraction of fragments of the real-time webcam covering the Shibuya intersection in Tokyo, this shows the density of subjects at a point where they collide following an individual path.

En respuesta radical al cambio en las condiciones ambientales de la tierra, la constante influencia de megacorporaciones científicas en el poder político emplean métodos de regulación de la población mundial, determinando como medida inmediata la castración genética de las generaciones futuras de humanos, dando paso a la creación artificial de vida como mecanismo regulador del impacto del humano en el planeta, de esta forma una nueva denominación de individuo es definida como humano transgénico, un ser genéticamente creado y modificado, exonerado de diferenciaciones biológicas sexuales y de las capacidades naturales de reproducción, dando paso a la concepción de un cuerpo no natural, genérico, puro y androgenizado. Como resultado se concibe la imagen del humano transgénico como un elemento de culto, devoción e iconografía dentro de las tendencias sociales y culturales.

In response to the change in the earth's environmental conditions, the constant influence of scientific corporations in political power employ methods of world population regulation, determining as an immediate action the genetic castration of future generations of humans. Giving way to the artificial creation of life as a regulatory mechanism of human impact on the planet, in consequence, a new denomination of individual is defined as transgenic human: a being genetically created and modified, exonerated of sexual biological differentiations and the natural capacities of reproduction, allowing the conception of an unnatural, generic, pure and androgenized body. The image of the transgenic human is perceived as an element of worship, devotion, and iconography within social and cultural trends.

Para representar la idea del humano transgénico en el Escenario #2 se define un producto de diseño basado en la creación de un atlas anatómico del modelo biométrico y fisiológico ideal del cuerpo humano artificial. El resultado se centra en la visualización de las características corporales que aluden a la androgenización y desexualización de la especie. Este prototipo parte de ejemplificar la forma corporal del individuo carente de órganos sexuales, mediante la simulación y escaneo tridimensional de la anatomía humana para la posterior alteración digital en base a parámetros físicos determinados en la narración construida. El atlas anatómico tambien surge de la exploraciónes visuales posteriores para la búsqueda del cuerpo idóneo y metafórico dentro del proyecto.

To represent the idea of the transgenic human in Scenario #2, a design product is defined based on the creation of an anatomical atlas of the ideal biometric and physiological model of the artificial human body. The result focuses on the visualization of the body characteristics that allude to the human androgenization and desexualization. This prototype starts by exemplifying the body shape of the individual lacking sexual organs, through the simulation and three-dimensional scanning of the human anatomy for subsequent digital alteration based on physical parameters determined in the constructed narrative. The anatomical atlas also arises from the subsequent visual explorations for the search of the ideal and metaphorical body within the project.

La definición de atlas humano proviene de indagar y referenciar los diferentes modelos de cuerpo humano moderno que han sido plasmados en diferentes épocas de la sociedad, estos intentan describir la biométrica ideal que debe tener la forma física humana fundamentándose en limitaciones arquitectónicas del entorno habitado. Por ende, se crea un modelo anatómico a partir de técnicas digitales que se relaciona la forma de construcción arquitectónica vertical mencionada en el Escenario #1. La concepción del cuerpo debe dar cuenta de la intención de traspasar el firmamento nublado. Asi este cuerpo humano artificial se caracteriza por ser esteticamente alargado lo que alieniza y estiliza su forma. Al mismo tiempo esta anatomía creada es carente de insinuaciones físicas de rasgos sexuales,no posee glándulas mamarias ni hormonales y sus órganos reproductivos son inexistentes dejando como consecuencia la presencia de una membrana disfuncional que recubre la zona pélvica.

The definition of a human atlas comes from researching the different models of the modern human body that have been represented in different periods of society. These models try to describe the ideal biometric that the human body should have based on the architectural limitations of the inhabited environment. Therefore, an anatomical model is created from digital techniques that relate to the form of architectural construction mentioned in Scenario #1. The definition of the body must account for the intention of crossing the cloudy sky. This artificial human body should be aesthetically elongated which alienates and stylizes its form. At the same time, this anatomy is lacking physical insinuations of sexual features, it has no mammary or hormonal glands, and its reproductive organs are nonexistent leaving the presence of a dysfunctional membrane covering the pelvic area.

Un elevado número de individuos significaría un riesgo para la especie, por lo tanto, una regulada producción de seres aptos físicamente influiría en una posible estabilidad en los conflictos sociales y ambientales a los que la humanidad estaría sometida a largo plazo. De este modo, la consideración de un modelo social centrado en controlar genéticamente el número de sujetos en el planeta podría dejar a un lado las ataduras éticas y morales de la sociedad.

A high number of individuals would mean a risk for the species, therefore, regulated production of physically fit beings would influence possible stability in the social and environmental conflicts to which humanity would be subjected in the long term. Accordingly, the consideration of a social model centered on genetically controlling the number of subjects on the planet could leave aside the ethical and moral ties of society.

Como referente conceptual del objetivo del atlas se analiza el hombre fabricado bidimensionalmente por Andrés Vesalio en su obra De humani corporis fabrica, donde la anatomización del ser humano surge de la disección ilustrada de su materia orgánica para describir su funcionamiento, así mismo la creación de un atlas humano es orientada en la visualización de sistemas específicos de la forma fisionómica de la especie transgénica.

As a conceptual reference for the objective of the atlas, the two-dimensionally fabricated man is analyzed by Andres Vesalius in his work De Humani Corporis Fabrica, where the anatomization of the human being arises from the illustrated dissection of its organic matter to describe its functioning, likewise, the creation of a human atlas is oriented in the visualization of specific systems of the physiognomic form of the transgenic species.

La represión genética, y el nulo acceso a los procesos de modificación del genoma humano conlleva a la disidencia de individuos que reclaman por el derecho al libre uso de la información biológica, la cual permitiría una constante modificación corporal y el desarrollo de un propio linaje evolutivo para así determinar una identidad existencial a través de cambios permanentes en la fisionomía humana y en el tiempo. Estos grupos subversivos promulgarían un culto por prácticas clandestinas e ilegales de implantación de órganos sexuales no funcionales como metáfora de renovación de la vida y como respuesta política a las condiciones sociales determinadas por un orden mundial. La implementación de dichos órganos sometería la morfología física del individuo irrumpiendo en la normalidad de su forma, donde a través de la Transfixión se profetizaría un acto de transverberación o santificación; en el cual la acción de herir la carne, produce dolor que se representado como un símbolo de placer, esto mediante el traspaso material del individuo con un objeto o arma corto-punzante.

Genetic repression and the lack of access to the modification processes of the human genome lead to the dissidence of individuals who demand the right to the free use of biological information, which would allow a constant body modification and the development of their own evolutionary lineage in order to determine an existential identity through permanent changes in human physiognomy and time. These subversive groups would promulgate a cult of clandestine and illegal implantation practices of non-functional sexual organs as a metaphor of renewal of life and as a political response to social conditions. The implementation of such organs would subdue the physical morphology of the individual, disrupting the normality of its form, where through the Transfixion an act of transverberation or sanctification would be prophesied, in which the action of wounding the flesh, produces pain that is represented as a symbol of pleasure, this by means of the material piercing of the individual with an object or short-puncturing weapon.

La materialización del órgano sexual no funcional propuesto en el Escenario #3 inicia por determinar el carácter de lo que se denominaría órgano artificial dentro de la diégesis, teniendo en cuenta que dicho tipo de alteración en la anatomía humana se daría por medio de la modificación física del individuo o la implantación de materia ajena al cuerpo. Por consiguiente, este órgano se materializa en un artefacto o estructura que somete la postura del cuerpo a través de su inserción, junto con esto, altera la condición fisiológica y biométrica de cuerpo deformando el estado natural de la morfología transgénica.

The materialization of the non-functional sexual organ proposed in Scenario #3 begins by determining what would be called an artificial organ within the diegesis, taking into account that this type of alteration in the human anatomy would occur through the physical modification of the individual or the implantation of matter foreign to the body. Therefore, this organ materializes in an artifact or structure that submits body posture through its insertion. Along with this, it alters the physiological and biometric condition of the body and deforms the natural state of the transgenic morphology.

El artefacto se compone de dos estructuras opuestas haciendo referencia a la oposición binaria de la biología del Sapiens. La primera denominada + (positivo) se desarrolla como una estructura que parte de la apertura forzada de la boca en donde se emite un señal láser que se extiende desde la boca hacia el exterior del cuerpo simbolizando la trascendencia o resurrección del individuo, al mismo tiempo, la estructura se extiende hacia el exterior del sistema bucal para amenazar directamente la tiroides, y así mortificar la carne como símbolo de reactivación hormonal de esta glándula.

The artifact is made of two opposing structures referring to binary opposition of the biology of Sapiens. The first called + (positive) is developed as a structure that comes from the forced opening of the mouth where a laser signal is emitted and symbolized the transcendence or resurrection of the individual. At the same time, the structure extends outward from the oral system to directly threaten the thyroid, and thus mortify the flesh as a symbol of hormonal reactivation of this gland.

El segundo componente nombrado por defecto como – (negativo), se caracteriza por imponer una apertura en la inclinación de la cabeza con respecto a la clavícula, este módulo atraviesa abruptamente el mentón y el esternón con una varilla vertical en la que se extiende perpendicularmente la tensión de un tejido orgánico ajeno a la materia humana, situándolo delante de la tiroides, allí las partes + y - hacen contacto cada una con su opuesta a través del traspaso de un elemento corto-punzante a un tejido artificial aludiendo a trasverberación a través de una herida.

The second component named by default as - (negative), is characterized by imposing an opening in the inclination of the head concerning the clavicle, this module abruptly crosses the chin and sternum with a vertical rod on which extends perpendicularly the tension of an organic tissue foreign to human matter, placing it in front of the thyroid, there the + and - parts make contact each one with its opposite through the transfer of a short-punching element to an artificial tissue alluding to transverberation through a wound.

El proceso de definición formal de este prototipo se centra en mostrar de manera estética la transverberación dada por la trasfixión de la carne del individuo, es decir el artefacto busca evidenciar la mortificación o acción de herir el cuerpo con el fin de redefinir el dolor como una sensación de placer, de esta forma se garantiza la trascendencia metafórica del ser transgénico hacia una nueva vida. Para plasmar esto en una escala física del artefacto se tomó como referencia conceptual la escultura realizada por Gian Lorenzo Bernini, la cual se retrata la trasverberación o éxtasis experimentado en los relatos religioso de Santa Teresa.

The process of formal definition of this prototype focuses on aesthetically showing the transverberation given by the transfixion of the flesh of the individual. The artifact seeks to demonstrate the mortification or action of wounding the body to redefine the pain as a feeling of pleasure, thus ensuring the metaphorical transcendence of the transgenic being to a new life. To capture this on a physical scale of the artifact, the sculpture made by Gian Lorenzo Bernini was taken as a conceptual reference, which portrays the transverberation or ecstasy experienced in the religious stories of St. Teresa.

En esta reinterpretación física se expone el cuerpo de dicha deidad en una postura donde su cabeza se extiende hacia la parte de atrás de su cuerpo y su boca se entreabre simulando una postura de placer. De este modo, se puede analizar esta iconografía religiosa en relación con la fisiología ejercida por el Homo Sapiens durante el coito. Como resultado de la búsqueda de aspectos estéticos se dedujo que el uso de elementos que atenten contra la materialidad del cuerpo repercute en el comportamiento de este obligando a accionar morfológicamente como respuesta a una posible amenaza.

In this physical reinterpretation, the body of this deity is exposed in a posture where hes head is extended towards the back of his body and his mouth is ajar, simulating a posture of pleasure. In this way, this religious iconography can be analyzed concerning the physiology exercised by Homo Sapiens during coitus. As a result of the search for aesthetic aspects, it was deduced that the use of elements that threaten the materiality of the body has repercussions on the behavior of the body, forcing it to act morphologically as a response to a possible threat.

La materialidad del artefacto esta influencia formalmente por los sistemas de osteosíntesis basados en el la implantación de elementos metálicos tales como platinas y tornillos para el tratamiento de fracturas; la osteosíntesis externa se basa en la fijación de estructuras metálicas al cuerpo a través a perforación de la estructura ósea, de acuerdo con esto, el uso de elementos metálicos como varillas, uniones y placas permiten la estructura del órgano y el sistema de inserción al cuerpo humano transgénico.

The materiality of the artifact is formally influenced by the osteosynthesis systems based on the implantation of metallic elements such as plates and screws for the treatment of fractures. External osteosynthesis is based on the fixation of metallic structures to the body through the perforation of the bone structure, accordingly, the use of metallic elements such as rods, joints, and plates allow the structure of the organ and the insertion system to the transgenic human body.

El sistema que acopla el órgano al cuerpo consiste en la perforación ósea donde se implanta un primer tornillo que sobresale sobre la dermis, luego de esto se pone una capa de tejido orgánico que hace contacto con la piel y es ajustada con una platina externa, esta platina se acopla sobre la forma del sujeto. El tejido orgánico es llevado a cabo por medio del cultivo simbiótico de bacterias y levaduras o Kombucha, esta produce una biopelícula de material similar al tejido dérmico humano. Esta producción y exploración de materia biológica con un carácter corporal simula tejidos humanos, permitiendo considerar el desarrollo del órgano más allá de una materialidad rígida y artificial.

The system that attaches the organ to the body consists of the bone perforation where a first screw that protrudes over the dermis is implanted, then a layer of organic tissue is placed that makes contact with the skin and is adjusted with an external plate, this plate is attached to the shape of the subject. The organic tissue is carried out by means of a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast or Kombucha, which produces a biofilm of material similar to human dermal tissue. This production and exploration of biological matter with a body character simulates human tissues, allowing to consider the development of the organ beyond a rigid and artificial materiality.

El desarrollo final de este proyecto concluye en conocimientos, reflexiones y cuestionamientos principalmente sobre el cuerpo humano, su anatomía y sus posibilidades de percepción, evolución y disrupción. Esto permite considerar la concepción material y objetual humana como un espacio de discusión sobre su evolución como especie, hecho que genera conversaciones sobre pensamientos como el transhumanismo o la eugenesia que alientan un rápido avance en las forma de existencia de la raza.

Los resultados concluidos pretenden abrir un amplio debate hacia los límites tanto éticos como sociales que la modificación corporal permite en el ser humano, donde su práctica puede determinar desde la auto-redefinición de la especie hasta la solución de problemas globales. La culminación material del proyecto considera centrar intereses futuros en la corporalidad humana y su mutación como un medio de exploración de diseño, resignificando su anatomía a un elemento que permite entablar diálogos entre aspectos materiales del humano y la repercusión de su alteración en las condiciones externas de su entorno.

De igual forma la finalización del proyecto evidencia un total desarrollo de un modelo metodológico enfatizado en el diseño de ficción como campo de estudio no relacionado a los métodos tradicionales de esta disciplina, los cuales castran las capacidades de innovación, dando como conclusión discusiones sobre las posibilidades que la ficción brinda como herramienta de creación crítica y especulativa en el diseño.

Por último, se determina una postura creativa que pretende aportar observaciones, conceptos y conocimiento a artistas, diseñadores o cualquier persona del común interesada en temas relacionados con la corporalidad humana, el diseño de ficción, las posibilidades de un futuro transhumano y desexualizado, la modificación corporal como evolución biológica y la transformación de la anatomía humana como acto político para resignificación del cuerpo. De igual manera, el proyecto logra dejar una puerta abierta a futuras iteraciones para seguir ahondando y cuestionando en la implicación que conlleva entender el avance incontrolable de la humanidad junto con la importancia de la información genética en este, además culmina con pretensiones a innovar en procesos de creación que involucran el diseño, la ciencia y la ficción.

The final development of this project concludes in knowledge, reflections and questioning mainly about the human body, its anatomy and its possibilities of perception, evolution and disruption. The results allow to consider the human material and its objectual conception as a space for discussion about its evolution as a species, a fact that generates conversations about thoughts such as transhumanism or eugenics that encourage a rapid advance in the way of existence of the race.

The results intend to open a debate towards the ethical and social limits that body modification allows in the human being, where its practice can determine from the self-definition of the species to the solution of global problems. The final material of the project considers focusing future interests in the human corporeality and its mutation as a means of design exploration, resignifying its anatomy to an element that allows to establish dialogues between material aspects of the human being and the repercussion of its alteration in the external conditions of its environment.

Likewise, the project conclusion evidences a total development of methodological model emphasized in the design fiction as a field of study unrelated to the traditional methods of this discipline, which castrates the capacities of innovation, giving as a conclusion discussions about the possibilities that fiction offers as a tool for critical and speculative creation in design.

Finally, a creative stance is determined that aims to contribute observations, concepts and knowledge to artists, designers or any common person interested in issues related to human corporeality, design fiction, the possibilities of a transhuman and desexualized future, body modification as biological evolutio and the transformation of human anatomy as a political act for the body resignification. Similarly, the project manages to leave an open door to future iterations to continue delving and questioning the implication of understanding the uncontrollable progress of humanity along with the importance of genetic information in this, also culminates with claims to innovate in creative processes involving design, science and fiction.
