Artist Statement
For my artist practice, I have shifted away from traditional figurative painting and into digital abstraction. I’m interested in exploring the mundane experiences of daily life by elevating them through abstraction; that were previously unattainable using strictly the figure. The dominant theme within these abstractions functions as a method of creative dreaming and the manifestations of those dreams. This process contrasts heavily from my previous body of paintings, which examined my past through a lens of trauma and family history.
Using readily available mediums such as acrylic, crayon, magazines, and digital editing software, I aim to communicate the mundane emotional experiences of daily life, leading to more tangible realizations of my conversations with the self. As a point of reference,
my collage titled, Matrix 2: Post Morpheus Speech, communicates my journey into art of DJing. This practice has lead to a fully developed creative project, “ Diamond Fetish”; series of musical curations aimed at merging the MICA and larger Baltimore social scenes.
Creative Project: Diamond Fetish
Diamond Fetish is a series of musical curations, composed of rotating DJ sets aimed at bridging the gap between MICA and the larger Baltimore Community.
The Diamond Fetish Series is curated by Akia Jones , Karryl Eugene (DJ Black Planet) Pearson Chambers( DJ Tracy ), and Jason Greenberg ( DJ sun).
Having the privilege of attending Maryland Institute College of Art, has given us a strong sense of community building. With heavy emphasis and attention on previously and currently enrolled students of color, we aim to curate an emotionally freeing space for both Baltimore and MICA Residents.
