In-Community: Cultural Mandala

This project was developed for Wolfe Street Academy and was in collaboration with students and parents at the school.  Wolfe Street Academy is an elementary school with a large latino immigrant population situated in Upper Fells Point. The purpose of this project was bridge gaps accross cultures and for the community to develop a value in diversity and similarities between groups.  As an artist I found that I shared a similar story to the youth as a Puerto Rican who had immigrated and migrated throughout my life and further from my cultural identity.  I understood this project to be meaningful for both students and parents to discuss their stories and share their experiences in their transitions. This created new friendships, an openess to learning about others and a healing from discrimination.

This mandala was in collaboration with parents at Wolfe Street Academy. They were asked to share symbolically who they are.  It revealed the values of tradition, culture and family throughout their transition to America.
