Cyberattacks Against US Organizations Rise

Recently, LaunchTech shared an article calling for increased cyber vigilance by American companies in the wake of cyberattacks perpetrated by Iran-sponsored groups and sympathizers. Tensions between the United States and Iran persist following the recent killing of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani. These tensions have spilled over into the digital front, according to a new assessment.

An increase in the number of cyberattacks was perpetrated against US-affiliated websites after Soleimani’s death. There have been website defacements, hacks on social media accounts, and rampant disinformation campaigns. More than 300 websites of US organizations, including the US Federal Depository Library Program, were defaced within two days of Soleimani’s death.

Attacks have also been perpetrated against US allies. The Twitter account of former Australian cricket coach Darren Lehmann was hacked and used to spread disinformation.

These attacks are primarily for spreading misinformation, tilting perceptions against certain groups. LaunchTech is calling on US organizations to improve their cybersecurity infrastructure so they do not fall victim to cybercriminal activity.
