Let me walk you through the surreal experience of the revered Sumidagawa fireworks, the oldest and largest fireworks festival in Tokyo.
As the sun sets, families rush to grab a spot in a closed off street in front of the Tokyo Skytree.
Yakitori street vendors light their fires in preparation for the festivities to soon come. The delicious aroma of charcoal-grilled chicken wafts around town.
By dusk, every alleyway and street is filled to the brim with blue tarps, cooler chests, and people.
The first fireworks shoot out from behind the apartments. Young couples, some dressed in yukatas, gaze upwards at the magical sky.
At every explosion, the buildings light up for just a second, painting the walls just as a beautiful sunset would.
People move forward to enjoy the rest of the light show. What an unforgettable experience. Until next time Tokyo.
