Charlotte Haslam - Portfolio

These images show exmaples of my work which were made according to a brief set by highstreet brand Bench.
This work was inspired and influenced by the buildings and sites in the Northern Quarter of Manchester City Centre.

Sample 1. - jumper front panel scaled down shaped sample using a single jersey fabric and a panel of slip stitch down the centre. Yarns - Acrylic and Polyester
Sample 2: This sample is meant to represent the scaffolding and railings that I saw in and around the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
This sample was created using a racked slipstitch technique.
Yarns - Acrylic and Lambswool
Sample 3:
This fabric was intended for a women's wear jumper.
The technque used, involved stitch transfer and racking. This enabled the striping of the green yarn in a vertical direction as opposed to common horizontal striping.
Sample 4.
This sample used a combination of slip stitch and racked ribs. I wanted to create a sample that had contrasting densities to show the contrast of delicate versus industrial, as seen a lot in the Northern Quarter.
Sample 5.
This sample was created on a power knit machine, created using CAD software. I made this jacquard design to again represent the scaffolding and railings that were seen in Manchester.
Sample 6.

This sample was created using a power machine with a purl (links/links) technique. This sample was made to aim to show the contrast between dense areas of knitted fabric and opaque, open areas.

These are some examples of my work relating to an experimental brief with the title 'Natural Forms'

Sample 1.
This sample was knitted using Acrylic and Elastic yarn. It was knitted on a 7 gauge hand v-bed machine using a roll technique along side stitch transfer. This fabric was meant to show the undulating patterns of coral. The uneven surface texture and lack of consistancy is meant to represent the disorder within nature.
Sample 2.
This sample was knitted using lambswool and then put throught the post knitting process of 'shibori felting'. This fabric is meant to represent the inside of a mushroom, the veins and crevices of the mushroom's cross-section.
Sample 3.
This sample was created on a v-bed hand machine, gauge 7. Yarns - acrylic and lambswool. This fabric was inspired by coral, I aimed to achieve a textured fabric that would be possible to use as a wearable fabric for a women's wear garment.
Sample 4.
Woollen knitted fabric then laundered using the post knitting technique of 'shibori felting' to create pockets of unfelted knitted fabric. This fabric is meant to represent sea sponge.

This work was created following a brief set by Edinburgh Weavers with the title 'Monastic, historic, decadent, electric and old masters'. The fabrics were created for a 4-5 star hotel. They were design using Photoshop and hand drawing and were then digitally and screen printed on to a variety of silk velvet, cotton/sateen, paper and voile fabrics.
