Chinese Lunar New Year Red Packets:
NGIES Blue Packets 2020—Year of Rat

The biggest change for the Ngies household red (or blue) packets this year would be the change in shape. It is a debatable topic. Many dislike the square packets as the new, beautiful, crisp, freshly printed note you often receive during the Chinese Lunar New Year would have to be folded. However, I've decided from hereon Ngies household would be sticking to square packets because you can print 2 red packets on one piece of A4 (instead of just 1 if you stick to the usual dimensions). & 2020 we are all about less waste, even if it is festivities. So, sorry to those who look forward to un-bended fresh plastic notes of Singapore.

Additionally, there is high pressure on the Year of Rat as it's my Dad's year. The need to impress him is tenfold! I actually did 4 different designs/illustration before liking this final piece. I was inspired by the clean yet strong designs on chops/stamps, and wanted something of the same vibe. In order to use the Mandarin phrase as the main element of the design, I decided to keep the typeface simple and incorporate the rats inside the font itself. The rats are drawn to look like baos/pau/bao zi (chinese buns),

The typeface is illustrated and customized (by me) to fit my design.
