We are facing a situation that is full of stuff and temptations. At the same time, we all seek meaning and connection. To realize we are in the same biofilm, which we share the resource with a limit, we have to reconsider the way we use objects and produce them as well.

For worldwide/huge-scale companies, they prefer to outsource the production to the suppliers, and their design will be affected more or less by the manufacturers. In this perspective, I believe that improving the design of the manufacturers can also have an impact on the products of huge companies because the suppliers are the basis.

However, these great brands always have the power to enclose the product and make it profitable in some way, from making the core components hard to replace to the non-disassemblable structure. In this case, I also propose a new factory-centered system in which the manufacturer can not only be the supplier of companies but directly connect to the user/customer.

   

My approach to this design proposal, we are starting from dismantling a coffee machine to the experiments of material and technique. After these practices, I decided to focus on the heating device and its products.

We can have three perspectives to assess the impacts of the new domestic heating system:

1) For the big brands, their designs must fit the components from the suppliers. Once their supplier has a more durable and repairable component, the big brands also have to adjust the design a bit. Even they do not change the design, the components inside still have a big chance to be reused in many ways. The heating component in the system is long-lasting and easy to replace or upcycle.

2) For the new business, this domestic heating system can create different opportunities. For instance, a new product has a longer warranty and encourages users to repair by themselves. Users have more abilities to change or maintain their product and also helps the place like repair cafe or maker space to have more chances to upgrade the products. 

3) For individual users, the domestic heating system can change their stereotype of the appliance. It can make them start to aware of what is the minimum unit of a heating product. Once they know this simple structure, and they will more motivate to maintain it, which can extend the lifespan of the product. Furthermore, advanced users or makers can easily create an experimental object from this domestic heating system. From this point, the domestic heating system is a conceptual set of bricolage.
