Oppression to liberation

A few years ago I became acquainted with Margaret Atwood's book “The Handmaid's Tale”. It's amazing how one story can suck you in like this. Wherever I went, when I saw a beautiful landscape, a cityscape or interior, I always depicted a woman (a handmaid) in the middle of all this beauty, held back by invisible chains. She was humble, trying to hold her spirit strong, and resist the theonomy to which she was subjected.
These photos carry a story of a young woman's life under oppression and self-censorship. Her escape from it all, and finding her way to liberation through small forbidden acts.
Even a rat in the maze can feel free because it can go anywhere as long as it remains within the maze. She starts to feel trapped in a moment when she looks up, sees birds flying and realises that there is more beyond these walls. She starts to feel afraid. Not of life, or death, but of wasting one's life as she had never existed at all. This knowledge creates a temptation to break free and to see what lies beyond the walls. What you don't know won't tempt you.
