Korean Seasonal Customs illustration
with Namsangol Hanok Village
Since ancient times, there have been traditional customs in Korea at specific times of the year.
At the request of Namsangol Hanok Village, I drew illustrations of Korean Seasonal Customs.
And based on these illustrations, Namsangol Hanok Village made a calendar.
세시풍속 일러스트 (with 남산골 한옥마을)
예로부터 한국에는 1년의 특정 시기마다 행하는 전통 풍습이 있었습니다.
저는 남산골 한옥마을의 의뢰로 한국의 세시풍속을 담은 일러스트를 작업했고,
이 일러스트들을 기반으로 남산골 한옥마을에서 달력을 제작했습니다.
January. Flying a kite
Continued until the Full Moon, all the misfortune in the New Year is taken away on the kite.
February. Jwibulnori (Full Moon's Day)
It is a seasonal ceremony of fireworks on a paddy or field practiced on the night of January 14th and 15th on the lunar day to symbolize the removal of harmful animals and misfortune.
March. The god of the wind - Yeong-Deung grandmother
On February 1st on the lunar day, for the safety and protection of our home, we prayed with a bowl of clear water to the God of wind who brings the maritime safety and prosperity from Heaven.
April. Archery
We held an archery contest to reinforce our body and mind that have weakened all winter long when outdoor activities were limited.
May. Floating a lotus lantern
On April 8tn on the lunar day, we make lamps with the zodiac of children and send out the lamps of enlightenment.
June. Washing hair with Change water (water infused with sweet flag)
On May 5th on the lunar calendar known as 'Dano', people washed their face and hair with water infused with sweet flags, as they believed it expels the illness.
July. Cheon-Ryeop (Net fishing)
Cheon-Ryeop is catching fishes on the summer vacation.
August. Feed for Magpie
It is a custom on July 7th on the lunar day to leave a bowl of rice on the wall in return for the magpie birds that made a bridge, Ojakgyo.
September. Ganggangsulae (traditional Korean circle dance play)
After a rich harvest on Hangawi, women gathered to pray for an abundant harvest and prosperity in the family.
October. The food made with Chrysanthemum
On Semtember 9th on the lunar day, when Chrysanthemum flowers are in full blossom, we made wine and pan-fried delicacies with them that are known for a long life.
November. Traditional rites in October
October was believed to be the best month of the year. People prayed to the God of the house for the safety and prosperity in October.
December. Red bean porridge
On December 22nd, we made a red bean-based soup, Patjuk, because the red color is known to expel the misfortune and people prayed to our ancestors for peace in the New Year.
