Helmet/Skull Cover concept

This is my concept art for a project I am working on in my team here I will so you how I have been developing it and the outcome.
This is a cover art concept art that i have currently been working on, it is based off our game called Annihilation where you play as as character who has had his homeland destroyed by aliens and filled with vengeance he returns to the planet to wipe out all the aliens and to taker back his home land. 


This was the first step to creating this cover art, I began with sketching out a skull with rough lines so i could see where shading and depth will need to be added to make it look realistic. I spend time going over the bone structure and lines highlighting every detail which i wanted to stand out.
Next I went onto adding some shading and colour behind the lines really showing off the depth of the skull in some areas and to enhance shadows found in the structure of the skull. Once the greys had been drawn in it brought the skull together and made it look less flat than before.
After the skull I began to work on the other side which would have the helmet. The helmet design came from a sketch that I made and digitalis-ed for the characters concept art. I took half the helmet from the character and adjusted the colours so they were no longer blue to give it this evil and demonic style to go with the skull on the right.
Once the main helmet/skull had been created I then simply made a background to contrast it and to make it stand out, i also gave it a "gas" or aura around the head to make it seem like it has a spirit in it.
