Senior living industry experts believe it is time for industry players to brace for COVID-19. As of February 27, over 80,000 people have been infected by the virus wile nearly 3,000 have already died. The Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that there are 60 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in the US. Moreover, it was reported that the first “community transmission” of the virus has already occurred in California.

This caused alarm to industry experts. Older adults are at serious risk for complications since they have weaker immune defenses. Should an outbreak occurs, providers are enjoined to take measures to prevent or delay the spread of COVID-19 in their communities. One of these measures is quarantine. Senior living operators have been implementing quarantines against influenza and pneumonia.

Although the occurrence of an outbreak is uncertain, any unforeseen infection could impact the viability of small operators, especially if the caregivers need to deal with large numbers of patients. The situation could worsen if hospitals get overrun by patients and affected residents have nowhere to go.

Industry experts recommend for senior living operators to implement the precautionary measures provided by the CDC, which guide businesses and employers in controlling the spread of COVID-19. Operators are also encouraged to initiate visitor protocols in their communities. Additionally, everyone must stay vigilant and in close communication with the health authorities in their areas.
