Falco (ファルコ)

Future Boy Conan (未来少年コナン) is an animation series produced in 1978 by Nippon Animation written by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Yoshiyuki Tomino, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is an adaptation of Alexander Key's novel The Incredible Tide. It is also my favourite anime, since my childhood.

The Falco seaplane is probably the most iconic vehicle of the series. To me, it is not just a machine but almost a character, with its own narrative arc: menacing at first, useful and reassuring at the end. I think that, even in this seminal work, the love of Miyazaki for airplanes and the fascination for their pilots is evident.

For this plastic model kit, I had to do some work in removing seam lines, re-creating rivets lost during sanding, and painting the Falco's recognisable colour schema. I did a bit of pre-shading, but I decided not to weather it to stay as close at possible to its depiction in the series. I decided to give an idea of cartoon-like water to the base, since water is a prominent element in the anime.

And the perfect environment for the Falco.
