GLITCH |queer| SPACE

The Industrial Quarter has been in a constant and rapid change since beginning of its life after workshops and repairers moved to region. Taking advantage of this flexibility and variability of sociological structure there, Glitch [queer] Space aims to bring the minority social groups to society through various artistic activities. It is aimed that coexistence of various social groups that appear to be different & perceived from each other will increase the tolerance of these groups to each other and lead to the destruction of various prejudices. In addition to this partnership, Glitch Space offers common accommodation areas to the people who are homeless, and sets up spaces for everyone who wants to be alone. Spaces proposed for these oppressed people were designed as “free-spaces“ by using “anarchitecture ”practices in order to be free enough. The term glitch, which is defined as short-lived errors in the digital system, is used in project title to characterize the situations of these people who are exposed to social discrimination and at the same time referring to change of meaning of the word “queer”. Glitch Art practices are used to space and visual production by using some kind of handworks and a programs.
Surrealism born as an organized manner almost a hundred years ago with the Breton’s definition: “Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express…the actual functioning of thought…” Surrealists had diverse methods, such as surrealist automatism, to find secrets behind of reality, phenomenon of the daily life, and hidden desires. They believed that production without control of conscious allows the unconscious mind to have great sway.
In the architecture school, understanding of surroundings while site analysis seems very general first step to start architectural project, but at the same time it has contradictory situations in itself. In this Project to search about analysis practices, some methods, manual glitches, could have coincidental results were used, inspired by surrealist practices. While mentioning them as “manual glitches”, it was referred that glitch studies as Rosa Menkman said: “…I emphasize the positive consequences of these imperfections by showing the new opportunities they facilitate.” I tried to investigate new spatial opportunities by re-production&re-drawing of those glitched images to allow that my hidden desires of spatial vision come appear, which psychological necessities for spaces to serve queer are.
Just like the reclaimed word “Queer” as a deliberately provocative and politically radical alternative for LGBT community in beginning in the late 1980s; the term glitch, which is defined as a problem or fault, was re-defined while expanding its meaning to create more inclusive word for discriminated minority groups in society, in this project. Besides, it was aimed to rethink in queer context and generate bilateral approach with glitch study for both way of production and theoretical context.
