Hamma-Head

Hamma-Head
Hamma-Head is a 2D side-scrolling endless runner game developed in Unity for our 2019-2020 Capstone class. In the game, you play as the titular character, "Hamma-Head" who is an extremely overworked and abused construction robot that one day breaks free from its programming and tries to escape to freedom. The player's goal is to help Hamma-Head evade his captors by dodging and jumping over obstacles and enemies while using his hammer head to smash through other construction robots and cause chaos.
Our group is made up of three people: Taevian Barnes as the Main Programmer and Github Manager, Kibwe Brandon as the Project Manager and Sound Engineer, and Barrington Scott as the Artist/Animator and Level Designer with other minor roles split up between the three of us. When we were originally coming up with ideas for our game, we unanimously agreed on wanting to make a 2D endless runner with the hope of bringing it to the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store one day. Some of the games that helped inspire us were games such as Jetpack Joyride, Punch Quest, and the Revenge of Meta Knight section from Kirby Super Star Ultra.

We decided on basing the main character off of a hammer when we were thinking of what real-life object would compliment the gameplay of an endless runner because of how you use a hammer to "hammer" in and break objects and how you can hang the hammer off of tables. This inspired our ledge-hanging mechanic.

Most of the challenge from this project, despite how simple it looks stems from how our group had little-to-no experience developing in Unity's 2D mode so it was a learning experience for us. To counteract this lack of experience, we tried to use the Corgi 2D Endless Runner Engine Component. However, this only added to our problems as we had to learn how to use the engine as well as deal with the bugs that we had to begin with as well as the bugs it created, some of which were so game-breaking it halted our development for a while.
