Shall We Talk
The content of the publication is a translation of the original interviews with my father conducted in Chinese via video call. The conversation is based around his habit of writing letters to me, which seems quite unusual in this digital world. Given the fact that you can text and send your messages within seconds, letters have become less popular. However, something is missing in those text messages. Less emotion attachment and less energy are needed. Whereas when writing a letter, physical equipment and movement are required, which to some extent, makes the communication more valuable and insightful. More thoughts and time are devoted to the receiver. The interview also discusses the way we communication and our misunderstanding to each other. Typefaces used are Baskerville URW and Adobe Song Std.
The booklet is designed to have elegant and classic feelings. Honeycomb textured papers are used as the body of the brochure, whereas light grey colour papers are chosen as insert pages. Two stock papers are designed to complement each other to provoke a nostalgic feeling. I collected and scanned those delicate letters that my father wrote and used them as insert pages to my booklet. Each insert page has a centred scanned letter in Chinese and one English footnote at the bottom. Two languages play throughout the book. Left pages are intentionally left to be blank to encourage the reader to read the insert pages and to reflect.
