The Umbrella Man

Roald Dahl's The Umbrella Man is a book cover illustration I did during my second year of art college. This assignment focused primarily on the cover illustration and method of printing. Risograph printing was utilised for the cover of the book.  As for the illustration of the Umbrella Man, it was hand drawn digitally using a Wacom tablet on Photoshop.

The inspiration behind the pose itself is from an old WWI British propaganda poster entitled 'Lord Kitchener Wants You'. The colour scheme are inspired by the Union Jack as the narrative takes place in Britain. The patterns are appropriations of old victorian patterns. The inspiration with the WWI poster also plays well with risograph printing as it gives a very gritty Xerox like look to the cover, which mimics old flyers that were actually printed out during WWI.

The font used for the body text is Century, as it is known to be the typeface that is the easiest on the eyes.
