Eyre Lake is Australia ’s largest salt lake and a place that attracts many people ’s imagination. It is located 647 kilometers north of Adelaide, South Australia. Eyre Lake actually consists of two lakes: North Eyre Lake and South Eyre Lake. The lakes are connected by the 15-kilometer Goyder Strait. Two lakes together, 144 kilometers long and 77 kilometers wide.
Eyre Lake is the lowest point below sea level on the Australian mainland (15.2m below sea level). Eyre Lake is the focal point of the Eyre Lake Basin, Australia's second largest drainage system.Covers a million square kilometers in the Eyre Lake Basin.The lake is named after the explorer Edward John Eyre, who was the first European to see it in 1840. Eyre Lake suffers a small flood (1.5 m) every 3 years and a major flood (4 m) every 10 years, with an average of only four floods per century!
