"VSCO" Girl Icon Set

VSCO Girl Icon Set

My objective for this project was to create an icon set that incorporated iconic items you might associate with a "vsco" girl. What is a VSCO girl, you ask? According to Urban Dictionary a VSCO girl, "wears oversized t-shirts or sweatshirts with Nike shorts. Has Vans, Crocs, and Birks. She always has a hydroflask. She can't leave home without a scrunchie and her favorite car is a jeep."
Sketches

For my sketches, I wanted to keep things simple, but recognizable. Getting my ideas out on paper was the main idea here. I will admit, after about six items, it became a little harder to think of things that would work. While sketching I was able to talk with my teenage sisters and ask them what they thought of my ideas. They suggested I add in a few things that "VSCO" girls love; sunflowers, polaroids, hair clips, and chapstick to name a few.

Draft

The first initial draft was tough. Making sure all the lines and shapes were precise was a tedious process. I could not figure out how to add shadows and highlights to make it look more dimensional. This was frustrating and a little discouraging. After a peer critique, I got some feedback and was able to make some adjustments.
Final Icon Set

This icon set has a good variety of things that symbolize a "VSCO" girl. The colors are bright and happy, but have a muted retro tone. I added subtle shadows and highlights to the icons to give a more dimensional look. By removing the logo on the socks, I was able to add my own style to them. By adding creasing to the scrunchie it made it more realistic. These elements combined with the subject matter appeals directly to my target audience. I arranged the icons on a purple background to make the light elements stand out more and continue with the bright, retro theme.
