DHARAVI SLUM primary school

The project, located in a big and densely populated area, needs strong basis to be carried on. One of the most important things is to plan the construction gradually. Consecutive steps, related to the natural situation and the use of the area, make a building plan. Starting from the areas that every year are flooded, an intensive housing construction is organised in order to provide as much dwellings as possible. They must also be flexible, because of the possible changing of the population number and the family income. Suddenly the rest of the area is occupied in a less intense way, but always with a great flexibility. Another important theme is the local identity, strictly linked with the way of living the public space. The main pedestrian path between the two railroad stations is defined by public building and generates other littler collective spaces. Here the natural element is inserted to provide better living conditions.
Because of the great presence of children, the next step is the study of a school building. The complex must hold students from 6 to 16 year. It is divided in 5 blocks, with different functions. For this reason, common and movement places are more important for the definition of the school identity. Giving particular characteristics to each building, the children can find easily the different places and feel better in relation to their age. Outside the buildings are very simple and, with the use of stone alternating with wood, they define three different piazzas.
