Multi-resistant bacteria are an increasing problem in modern medicine. By skillfully utilizing the mineral nutrients that are essential for the bacteria, certain mechanisms of resistance development can be levered out.
Classic beta lactam antibiotics cross the bacterial cell membrane via passive porine channels to bind to penicillin binding proteins (PBP). The discharge takes place via so-called Efflux pumps.
The novel antibiotic Cefiderocol, on the other hand, uses also the active and essential transport of iron to overcome the bacterial cell membrane.
These and other mechanisms make resistance development by the bacterium significantly more difficult.
