Brian James Spies is a visual artist working in various mediums whose work explores power’s relationship to contemporary narratives. His work has focused in part upon the role the media has played in the expansion of hydro-fracture mining (or fracking) in his hometown in rural north central Pennsylvania. Brian’s work has also focused on broader issues of exploitation with an emphasis on how information is manipulated by those in power. Brian graduated with honors from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with a Concentration in Photography in 2002. He took seven years off to work in everything ranging from graphic design to photo restoration as well as to exhibit his work in sites ranging from California to Lower Manhattan. In May of 2010 Brian graduated from The Maryland Institute College of Art with a Certificate from The Post-Baccalaureate Program. In the autumn of that year he began his first semester as an MFA Candidate at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. While a student and since his graduation in May of 2012 Brian has exhibited at various artist spaces and alternative venues in and around Philadelphia including a solo show at The Hex Factory in Kensington which Ben Meyer, writing for The Art Blog, called “… a full-throated artistic roar against the insanity of ‘hydro-fracking’…” Read Less

I am a multi-media artist who is interested in how signs and symbols are used to shape cultural narratives that act to exclude people from the mainstream. I use the tools and aesthetics of mass communication to critique how these cultural structures are utilized for this marginalization. Growing up in an economically and racially segregated suburb in rural north central Pennsylvania I struggled with the outsider status that I had been assigned as a result of not fitting into other people’s idea of what I should be. This feeling of powerlessness made me acutely aware of how others find themselves marginalized. It is my intention with this work to explore how the value and meaning placed upon images, icons and language relates to notions of identity. Ultimately, I hope to illuminate how the way in which we assign value to visual objects determines who is excluded from the stories we tell. Read Less
